The Vacation Outside Your Door

After a long day, can you imagine arriving at a beautiful retreat that engaged your senses while also relaxing you?  What stress relief!  What if you could do this every night?  You can.  You can take a vacation everyday – at home – with a beautifully landscaped yard.

As with most things in life, designing and maintaining a specialty lawn isn’t an easy task.  It’s not for quitters, or people who are inflexible or easily distracted.   There is a significant amount of planning that goes into a successful lawn before anything can be planted.  But the reward is well worth the effort.  If you are considering enjoying the benefits of a landscaped lawn, here are some keys to success:

Get dirty.  Plants are like people.  Each one has different needs and likes different things.  Take the time to get to know your yard by taking soil samples. Samples can be tested and results will help determine your design plan.

Know your exposure.  This simply means knowing what areas of your yard receive morning or afternoon sun as well as shade.  Remember, exposure also changes with the seasons.

Know your heat and cool zones.  Knowing what temperature zone you are in when living in the south is important when choosing plants.  Heat is a factor.  For example, many plants found in Miami would not survive in Tampa due to our cold snaps.

Understand different plant needs, including when to trim.  There are good and bad times to trim plants.  A perfectly healthy plant can be decimated by trimming at the wrong time.

Be creative.  There may be areas in your yard that may not be conductive to grass or plants.  However, a fountain, custom walkway, or another design element can bring beauty to an otherwise unsightly area.

Treat your lawn at the right times. For example, pre-emergent is an herbicide and needs to be put down before the soil temperature hits 70 degrees.  If you miss the window and seeds germinate, this herbicide will not protect your lawn from weeds.

Become a watering expert.  This includes having a schedule for grass and plants, and staying informed on possible water restrictions.

Know the tree removal policies of your county.

Manage problems before they arise. A healthy yard will choke out weeds. A stressed yard (from lack of water, being mowed to short during a drought, etc) will be overrun.  Once a yard has issues, it can be a headache, not to mention expensive, for you to fix.

Plan ahead.  Depending on your soil type, everything in your yard, especially bushes, needs to be replaced about every 10 years.  Just as you would create a 3, 5 and 10-year financial plan, you should create the same for your yard.

Each plant thrives in different conditions. With time, patience and commitment you can create your own relaxing getaway.  In Florida, a correctly designed and maintained yard can be enjoyed year round.   Plus, the benefits of a beautifully landscaped lawn go beyond the enjoyment of you and your loved ones.  Many helpful insects and wildlife will be drawn to your yard and help the ecosystem through pollination and natural fertilization.  Another added benefit?  Curb appeal increases home value.  In fact, an attractively and correctly landscaped lawn can add thousands of dollars to your home value.
